BBQ season is officially here and we couldn’t be more excited! We want to help you kick off your BBQ season this spring by giving you inspiration on how to incorporate sustainability and local food into your meals.

The farmers market is a great place to get some inspiration. Make the most out of your market experience with some of our favourite tips. The market is a one-stop shop for your BBQ season with a wide variety of local fruits, vegetables, meats and baked goods.

What is a BBQ without some beverages? Look up local breweries in your city, or try this rhubarb cocktail. Now that you have your beverages, you need some vegetables, protein and fruit.

The clear star of the grill this season is asparagus. Grilling it, incorporating it into salads or wrapping it in bacon – the opportunities are endless. There’s always room for our other favourite spring veggies though!

Caesar Grilled Asparagus Step away from the traditional caesar salad and try caesar grilled asparagus. With the classic flavours from a caesar salad, your family won’t miss the salad!

Bacon Wrapped Asparagus – Because everything is better wrapped in bacon, right? It’s definitely the case with these grilled bacon wrapped asparagus. Bacon adds the perfect smoky flavour to fresh asparagus.

Sweet Pea Mint Barley Salad – Every BBQ needs a staple salad and our barley salad fits the bill. Adding mint to salads is a great way to add a boost of fresh, spring flavour. Don’t forget to pick up our vegetable stock for this recipe.

Grilled Radishes with Creamy Dip – Have you ever tried grilled radishes? We typically associate radishes with salads and dips, but this recipe puts a whole other spin on the crunchy vegetable.

Since we are all about sustainability, you might be asking yourself if we incorporate meat into our diets. Since the agricultural industry is one of the leading contributors to greenhouse gas emissions, how can you eat meat with less of an impact on our planet? Choosing meat that is local and sustainably-raised is important. Purchasing meat from reputable butchers, like Rowe Farms, or at your local farmer’s market is a great start. Also be sure to switch it up and try plant-based options. Homemade bean burgers or portobello mushrooms are flavourful alternatives that your whole family will enjoy.

Grilled fruit? You heard us right! The grill isn’t just for meats and vegetables. In the summer months, watermelon and peaches taste amazing on the grill. In the spring, strawberries and apples are your fruit of choice.

Grilled Strawberry Kebabs – Strawberries can be hard to grill on their own, so putting them into kebabs is genius. Just grill them like you would any other kebab and top with your favourite sweet sauce.

Grilled Cinnamon Apples – This recipe couldn’t be any easier! Just grill the apple slices and top with a drizzle of honey and cinnamon.
