Christmas is less than a month away, can you believe it?! With December fast approaching, the season of gift giving is upon us. It is easy to get swept up in the sale frenzy of Black Friday/Cyber Monday, but this year we urge you to try to purchase more local, sustainable gifts this holiday season.
Holiday pop-ups and Christmas markets are a great way to connect with local retailers and support local businesses. They are almost like the farmer’s market of the craft world! One of our favourite shows to attend to pick up local gifts for family and friends is the One Of A Kind Show located in Toronto. This show features over 800 unique artisans from across North America with everything being handmade!
Purchasing handmade crafts make amazing gifts, but homemade crafts can be just as great too! If you have children at home, it’s a fun activity to involve them in to make crafts for their family, friends and teachers.
If you are heading out into the retail world to pick up some gifts, consider shopping at local “green” retailers. Green retailers are ones that feature sustainable, local and ethical products in their shops. Many cities across Canada have amazing little shops to shop at and it’s another way to support local.
Filling hearts and bellies is one of our favourite ways to spread the love this holiday season. Consider giving the gift of food! Whether it’s creating some homemade treats like candied nuts, chocolate bark or even fruit preserves! Or maybe it’s gifting a co-op food box featuring local produce!
We would love to know what gifts you are planning for the holiday season! Be sure to follow us on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Pinterest, and tag us. You can also follow the conversation by following #eatlocal.
